The
Calling of Sinead
It’s Christmas 2030 A.D. and the world is awaiting the results of a
study being carried out by Jesuit priests at Termonbacca monastery
in Derry city. They are to decide if a deceased Derry man was the
most significant figure in Christian history - the second coming of
Christ.
A new world is in the making, where Ireland has been united, and
Protestants and Catholics live alongside each other in relative harmony. The Social Democrats are in government in Dublin, and
Sinn Fein are consigned to the edges of society where they control
small mafia cliques engaged in organised crime. Men dominate
politics. The political world is crying out for a female role model…
Dr Sinead Canavan is a 35-year-old business ethics lecturer at Magee
University, married to a consultant at Altnagelvin Hospital, and her
life is about to change radically. Strange things happen as she is
confronted with the chance to begin a political career. It seems
that it is more a case of being called than asked. Sinead
experiences the ecstasy of being loved, and the humiliation of a
tragedy, as she is called to change her life path.
The Calling of Sinead is an allegorical tale and a striking
portrayal of how the woman is increasingly called upon in our age to
make the world a better place for all.
