Inspired by the imminent closure of the Belmont pitches
on the Racecourse Road in Derry, John tells his own story of how his
life has been affected by living beside this idyllic paradise for sport.
But this autobiography is much more than that. It is a story of how the
author’s life mirrored in many respects – especially in his close
relationship with God – the life of Adam, the first man, who lived in
paradise with God.
The comparison is startling, right down to the fact that John received a
curse on a par with Adam’s over the head of a woman, his very own Eve.
The story culminates in a great injustice being done on the author. But, as John goes on to describe, God intervenes in a most remarkable
way, showing him all His love, and linking John in a substantive sense to
the great tragedy in New York on September 11th, 2001.
John sees September 11th as a turning point for him and for humanity, and as
a consequence it becomes apparent that mankind now stands at the gates of
Eden. Undoubtedly John will be instrumental in helping us to know that Eden –
for he has truly lived all of his life in the Eden zone.
